Fix: 

Type "about:config" in the URL (address) bar.
Filter on "gfx", then:

gfx.direct2d.disabled          -> set to "true"
gfx.use_text_smoothing_setting -> set to "true"

Restart FireFox to see the updated results. Fonts are now smooth.
